Snail Trail

The Snail Trail had been in existence for a couple years when BLM approached us to give it a face lift.  The trail was already a popular trail that was one of the more progressively designed trails built by BLM.  It had some rollers, quasi berms and a little bit of flow, just enough to leaving you craving more.  BLM was looking for some help rehabbing some problematic sections of trail that utilized old road beds.  These sections were steep and had started to develop deep ruts.

Enter Redding Trail Alliance and Andrew Pellkofer.  Pellkofer who was an employee of RTA during the construction of the Enticer had since started up his own trail consultation, planning and construction business.  For this project BLM and RTA shared the cost of hiring him.  We work wonderfully as a team, always communicating with each other to figure out what would work the best and putting our egos aside to achieve the best possible trail for the community.

The Snail Trial is now a much more sustainable trail.  Although the grade is on the steep side, it sheds water extremely well because of the technique of constantly sloping the tread so that instead of running down it, water is either running off the outside or inside, then exiting further down trail.

This trail is now a legitimate flow trail that is on par with any flow trail out there.  We’ve even heard it was the deciding factor in choosing to move to Redding.  No matter what, the smiles on our face every time we ride it confirm that it was a success.
